PlaydohOak Park Kindergarten uses the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework to develop our programs and they are based around children’s individual strengths and interests.

The teachers provide the children with a program which includes, but is not limited to, “group mat time”, free play, books and songs, social mealtimes, and group games and activities. Each year the curriculum includes incursions (e.g. Henny Penny Chicken Hatchings, Aboriginal Incursion & Dental health Incursion), special events (e.g. Chinese New Year, Easter, Eid, Holi) and social family gatherings (e.g. Mather’s Day Pamper Night, Father’s Day pizza night & End of Year Barbeque). Unfortunately due to Covid-19, 2020 saw many activities cancelled due to risk and health and safety for all.

One important fact to note is that learning the alphabet and to read is not part of the Early Childhood Curriculum.  These are part of the Primary School Curriculum and children will be taught these once they get to school.

We offer both 3 and 4 year old sessions on a weekly basis.

The 4 year old kinder program offers 15 hours per week, with a maximum of 30 children per group.

Five hours per week is offered for 3 year olds, with a maximum of 30 children per group.

There will be at least one teacher and two assistants in all sessions at all times. Our teacher-student ratio is 1:10.

Age requirement

Each child must turn the respective ages of 4 and 3 by the 30th of April in the year of attendance and must be toilet trained except in the case of a relevant medical condition. Children turning 3 after Term 1 commences (but before the 30th of April that year) need to pay the term fees to hold their place, but cannot attend the kinder until their third birthday.

Four year old program

The 4 year old classes use an indoor/outdoor program whereby children can choose to be inside or outside, or move between both areas.  This incorporates all styles of learning and allows the children to make their own choices in their learning and areas of interest on any given day.

We currently offer two different groups – two long days of seven and a half hours each, or three shorter days of five hours. Find out more about the 4 year old program, including current terms dates and sessions for 2020.

Three year old program

Being younger and needing more assistance, the 3 year old program tends to have all the children either inside or outside together.  However, this may change from year to year, depending on the particular children and what their needs and interests are.

In 2020,  at the start of the Kinder year, we incorporated the indoor/outdoor program for the 3 year old children.  This gives the children the opportunity to move freely around their learning environment.  Our program provides learning experiences indoors and outdoors, taking on the play based learning approach.  This also allows the child to find a space where they feel a sense of belonging, whether being inside or outside.
